Council Members Lead Workshop on Inclusive Meetings at Karis Connected Conference – Toronto
On May 1, 2026, Dzidra Halar and Brianne Taggart attended the Karis Connected Conference in Toronto, where they led a workshop on creating more inclusive meetings.
The workshop focused on ways to ensure that everyone in a meeting feels heard, valued, and respected. Around 20 people participated in the session, including professionals and self-advocates from Karis Connected.
Participants explored three key topics:
- Clear communication
- Accessibility
- Meaningful participation
The session was highly interactive, with participants sharing ideas through group discussions and collaborative activities. The workshop concluded with a final group activity where everyone had the opportunity to contribute and share their thoughts.


Council Members Advocate at Queen’s Park (Day at the Legislature) in Toronto – May 6th
On May 6, 2026, six Council members attended the annual Day at the Legislature at Queen’s Park in Toronto, where they spoke about issues affecting their communities.

Throughout the day, Council members met with their Members of Provincial Parliament (MPPs), attended Question Period, and met with Minister Michael Parsa.
Niko, Dzidra, Jem, Keith, and Farrah met with Minister Parsa. During the meeting, they shared positive experiences related to passport caseworkers and employment supports.
Council members discussed both positive experiences and ongoing challenges they face in their daily lives.
Niko, Council President, also followed up on topics discussed during a previous meeting last year, highlighted ongoing challenges within the community, and encouraged the Minister to continue paying attention to these important issues.

Minister Parsa thanked the Council members for their input and shared that he views the Council as an advisory committee. He also provided an update on the increase to ODSP, which was welcomed by Council members.
This marked the Council’s fifth meeting with Minister Parsa since 2024, demonstrating the ongoing collaboration between the Council and his office.
In the evening, Council members attended a reception where they connected with MPPs, staff, and self-advocates from across Ontario. The event concluded with thoughtful closing remarks from Council President, Niko Pupella.

Council Workshop on Inclusive Meetings at Karis Connected Conference – Sudbury
On May 28, 2026, Niko and Dzidra led a workshop on inclusive meetings at the Karis Connected Conference in Sudbury.
The session focused on creating meetings where everyone feels included, respected, and able to participate fully. Council members shared practical ideas about what helps people feel comfortable and supported when taking part in discussions.
Key topics included:
- Making communication clear and easy to follow
- Improving accessibility for all participants
- Encouraging meaningful participation from everyone in the room
Participants took part in group discussions and interactive activities throughout the workshop.

Council Workshop on Self-Advocacy at People Helping People Conference – Simcoe
On May 30, 2026, Council members facilitated a workshop titled How to Be a Self-Advocate at the People Helping People Conference in Simcoe. The session was attended by 70 self-advocates and support staff.
The workshop focused on helping participants understand the importance of self-advocacy and how to effectively speak up for themselves in everyday situations. Council members shared personal experiences and practical strategies for building confidence, strengthening communication skills, and increasing independence.
Attendees actively participated in discussions, shared their own experiences, and learned from one another. Council members emphasized that self-advocacy looks different for everyone and that taking small steps can lead to meaningful personal growth over time.
The session was well received and highlighted the importance of empowering people to express their needs, make informed choices, and ensure their voices are heard. Through open dialogue and shared learning, participants left with valuable tools and greater confidence to advocate for themselves in their daily lives.
