I am writing to express my enthusiastic interest in serving on the Board of Directors for Community Living Ontario. With a deep alignment with the Mission, Vision, and Values of Community Living Ontario, and a diverse background in volunteer work, research, and community engagement, I am eager to contribute to and learn from your esteemed organization.
I fully support Community Living Ontario's vision of a society where people with intellectual disabilities belong, have equal rights, respect, and acceptance, a sense of self-worth, and opportunities for growth. This vision resonates deeply with me as I have dedicated my career to advocating for the inclusion and empowerment of individuals with disabilities. My volunteer experience at Community Living Ontario's Family Series Event in Alliston equipped me with critical skills and insights, reinforcing my belief in the organization's mission and my commitment to creating inclusive environments.
As co-chair of the Youth Advisory Committee (YAC), I have overseen workshops on inclusive education and mental health, and presented at the 70th CLO annual conference with the talk titled, "Beyond Accommodation: Advancing Accessibility and Inclusion for Individuals with Disabilities in the Digital Age: A Universal Design Approach." I guided members in various campaigns, including the "Truths of Institutionalization" initiative, and helped reactivate YAC's social media to increase membership and virtually post our progress and achievements.
My background in brain research, particularly my role in the SickKids Summer Research Program, has provided me with a unique perspective on the intersection of scientific discovery and social impact. Conducting a study on the role of long non-coding RNAs in Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) required innovative thinking and effective communication. This experience underscored the importance of collaboration and inclusiveness, which are directly transferable to the Board.
Moreover, my experience as a community coach in Sault Ste. Marie has given me firsthand insight into the sociological impact of intellectual disabilities. Mentoring youth with disabilities in their first job experiences has been incredibly rewarding, highlighting the profound difference that supportive community engagement can make. This dual perspective from living in both Toronto and Northern Ontario aligns perfectly with Community Living Ontario's values.
My greatest contribution to this Board would be my ability to combine scientific knowledge with practical community experience. I can bring a data-driven approach to the Board, ensuring that our decisions are informed by the latest research and best practices. Additionally, my hands-on experience in community engagement and advocacy enables me to provide valuable insights into creating inclusive environments that empower individuals with intellectual disabilities.
Serving on the Board of Community Living Ontario will also be immensely beneficial for my personal and professional growth. It will provide me with the opportunity to further develop my leadership skills, collaborate with like-minded individuals, and contribute to meaningful change in the community. Participating on this Board will deepen my understanding of the challenges faced by individuals with intellectual disabilities and the strategies needed to address these challenges effectively.
In summary, I am passionate about the mission of Community Living Ontario and committed to contributing to its vision of an inclusive society. My unique background in brain research, combined with my extensive experience in community engagement, positions me well to make a significant impact on the Board. I am excited about the opportunity to work alongside dedicated individuals to advance the organization's goals and create a more inclusive society.
Thank you for considering my application. I look forward to the possibility of discussing how my background, skills, and enthusiasm can contribute to the success of Community Living Ontario.
