Legal Capacity and Decision-Making

Ontario has fallen far behind other jurisdictions in respecting and supporting the decision-making rights of people with intellectual disabilities. For decades, Community Living Ontario has advocated to advance a modern understanding of legal capacity and decision-making.

The Right to Decide: How would you feel if you had no say in where you live, who you spend time with, what you wear, what you eat, who you visit, or how you spend your money? This can happen to people with disabilities when others make decisions for them. We believe everyone has the right to make their own choices. Supported decision-making helps people with disabilities stay in charge of their lives while getting the assistance they need.
