Wearable Technology – Awake Labs
About Awake Labs
Stress, anxiety, and strong emotions can often present as barriers to inclusion and an enjoyable life for adults with intellectual disabilities. These barriers can be challenging to understand and see. This is where Awake Labs is making a difference.
We develop technology that helps people with intellectual disabilities manage their stress so they can spend less time worrying and more time enjoying life. Our software platform uses a smartwatch and a mobile device. The smartwatch is worn by the person experiencing stress. The mobile app displays real-time stress levels and can be used by self-advocates or their caregivers (e.g. family member, respite worker, personal support worker).
Awake Labs is a company based in Toronto, Ontario. We are a group of entrepreneurs, engineers and designers who came together because of our shared desire to help improve quality of life for people with intellectual disabilities. Since 2015, we have worked with partners including Holland Bloorview Kids Rehabilitation Hospital, the Ontario Brain Institute, and Community Living agencies throughout Ontario.
What We Do
We partner with self-advocates, Community Living agencies, and researchers to understand how stress and anxiety affect the lives of people with intellectual disabilities. Through these partnerships, we have learned our technology helps:
- Improve quality of life for our partners
- Reduce the number of stress-related incidents
- Increase caregiver confidence to identify and respond to stress
- Reduce and eliminate the use of intrusive measures
