A dedicated mother of two children, Stinder has over 30 years of experience advocating on behalf of her son Shamil, who was born with physical and intellectual disabilities. Her journey as an advocate began as a teenager in England, helping her father raise funds for people with intellectual disabilities through the Lions Club. Her career as an advocate began in earnest when her son Shamil was four years old and attended the Children’s Developmental Assessment Services in St. Catharines. Together with the organization, she successfully lobbied for the construction and equipping of the first sensory Snoezelen room, which provided therapeutic benefits for individuals with disabilities.

Throughout her career as an advocate, Stinder has been actively involved in various organizations and initiatives. She has been passionately involved with Community Living York South’s outreach team for over 10 years. She has held positions such as the Board President and served on the board of directors, committees, and task forces. Stinder has also been involved in family networks, retreats, and workshops, contributing to the growth and development of the community living movement.

In addition to her contributions within the agency, Stinder has created two community social groups: York Abilities and Parent Education Advocacy Group. These groups provided support, resources, education and networking for families facing similar challenges in the developmental service sector. Further to the 10 years she has served the Community Living Ontario Board as a director since 2019. Stinder’s interest in Independent Facilitation and Microboards has led her to collaborate with other families in submitting a proposal to the provincial Housing Task Force. Their innovative initiative has been successful, furthering their goal of providing inclusive housing and support for individuals with disabilities.

Stinder brings extensive experience in advocacy, a deep understanding of the issues within the Developmental Service Sector, and a steadfast commitment to promoting the community living movement. Her passion lies in helping families receive the necessary support as lifelong caregivers, ensuring that every individual has the opportunity to participate in an inclusive community with the support they need.
