Hosted by Community Living Ontario’s Student Links initiative, Commence provides human service workers, families and others who support youth who have an intellectual disability with the necessary tools to enable them to discover their gifts, to explore their passions, and to identify roles that make for a richer life.

This year’s speakers and facilitators are Michael Kendrick, independent international consultant in human services and community work, and Bruce Anderson, author and faculty at the Asset Based Community Development Group at Northwestern University.

Michael’s morning session on February 1 is titled Developing a Vision of the Good Life. In this session, Michael will discuss the importance of discerning people’s deep identities, or callings. He will take a look at how we go about envisioning better, and raising our expectations for the Good Life. During Michael’s afternoon session Strengthening the Vision, he will discuss designing both support for the vision, and ways forward so that the vision will be actualized.

In Finding Our Gifts in the Good Life, Bruce’s morning sessions will guide participants through an exercise that will help to identify core gifts, as individual gifts and callings are at the root of understanding and developing personal fulfilment. Bruce’s afternoon session, Cultivating Hope and Resilience in the Good Life, will examine how to cultivate hope and resilience in individuals and groups. Any vision requires ongoing commitment and vigilance. Hope helps us maintain that vision.
