Dear Mr. O’Leary,
Thank you for your letter outlining Community Living Ontario’s priorities and concern for people with intellectual disabilities. The Ontario NDP shares your concern and is committed to investing to improve services and programs for those in need.
The Ontario NDP will provide the much needed funds to improve supports for those with developmental disabilities and their families. As part of our platform we are keeping the budget promises that we know are much needed and that we can deliver on.
In addition we will re-strike a Select Committee on Developmental Services to continue work on their important recommendations on how to improve these services. We will also work with families and stakeholders to implement their recommendations for families to have smoother and better access to services in the future.
In the 2014, budget the Liberals promised some much needed funding for developmental services. In fact, they made over 70 other promises, when they were not even able to keep three budget promises from last year. They are trying to escape their scandals by promising the moon and the stars and the NDP had some serious concerns about whether those promises would be kept – we’ve heard from people of Ontario who no longer trust them to keep their promises.
To answer your specific questions:
1. If your party is elected, would you commit to ending the wait for funding and supports for people who have an intellectual disability, and their families and stabilizing services by committing to the $810 million over three years as promised in the proposed 2014 provincial budget?
2. Our members wish to know, should you form government, what would you invest in the developmental services sector and over what time period?
We will invest an additional $810 million in the community and developmental services sector over the next 3 years.
